How to Tell If a Tree Is Dying

A healthy tree can go from thriving to dead in a few years. The decline is usually gradual, and by the time most homeowners notice something is wrong, the tree may already be beyond saving.

The challenge is knowing what to look for. Trees do not show distress the way a lawn or garden plant does. A dying tree can still have green leaves, bark that looks normal, and a canopy that seems full. The early warning signs are subtle, easy to overlook, and often misread as normal seasonal variation.

Catching a tree in decline early gives you options: treatment, pruning, monitoring, or proactive removal before the tree becomes a hazard. Missing the signs means dealing with a dead tree that is already dangerous, more expensive to remove, and potentially one storm away from landing on your house.

Here are the nine warning signs that a tree on your property may be dying, and what to do when you spot them.

1. Bare Branches During Growing Season

This is the most obvious sign and the one most homeowners notice first. If every other tree in your yard has leafed out in spring and one has not, something is wrong.

A few bare branches in an otherwise full canopy can indicate localized dieback, which may be caused by a damaged root on that side of the tree, a fungal infection, insect damage, or a girdling root. Localized dieback is often treatable if caught early.

A tree that fails to produce any leaves at all during the growing season is likely dead or very close to it. A tree that produces leaves but they are significantly smaller, fewer, or more sparse than in previous years is showing signs of systemic stress.

One important exception: some trees leaf out later than others. Red oaks and walnuts are often among the last to produce leaves in spring. Wait until surrounding trees of the same species have fully leafed out before concluding that your tree has a problem.

2. Premature Leaf Drop or Fall Color

If your tree is dropping leaves in July, or if it starts changing color in August when it should not turn until October, the tree is under stress.

Early leaf drop and premature color change are responses to disrupted water flow. Something is preventing the tree from transporting water from the roots to the canopy. That something could be root damage, vascular disease (like bacterial leaf scorch or oak wilt), drought stress, or internal decay that has interrupted the flow of water through the trunk.

Drought stress in isolation is usually recoverable with watering. But if the tree receives adequate water and still drops leaves early, the cause is likely internal, and the prognosis may be more serious.

3. Dead Branches in the Crown

Every tree has a few dead twigs. That is normal. But when you see multiple dead branches scattered throughout the crown, especially large ones, the tree is telling you it can no longer sustain its full canopy.

Arborists call this “crown dieback,” and it typically starts at the tips of branches and works its way inward toward the trunk. The tree is pulling resources from its extremities to sustain its core. As the decline progresses, more and more branches die, and the canopy thins noticeably.

Crown dieback has many possible causes: root disease, soil compaction, grade changes, nutrient deficiency, vascular disease, insect damage, and prolonged drought. A certified arborist can often determine the cause by examining the pattern of dieback and the overall condition of the tree.

Dead branches are also a safety hazard regardless of the underlying cause. Large dead limbs can fall without warning, even in calm weather. If you have dead branches over your house, driveway, or areas where people spend time, have them removed by a professional regardless of whether the tree itself is dying.

4. Bark Falling Off in Large Sections

Healthy bark stays firmly attached to the trunk. It is the tree’s protective outer layer, shielding the living tissue underneath from disease, insects, temperature extremes, and physical damage.

When bark starts peeling away in large patches or sheets, exposing bare wood underneath, it usually means the living tissue beneath the bark (called the cambium) has died. Without the cambium, the tree cannot transport water and nutrients in that section of the trunk.

Small areas of loose bark can result from localized injury, sunscald, or frost cracks. These may heal on their own. But if bark is falling off on multiple sides of the trunk, or if the exposed wood underneath is dry, brown, and crumbly, the tree is in serious decline.

Some species (like sycamore and birch) naturally shed bark as part of their growth. This is not a concern. The key distinction is whether the bark is peeling to reveal healthy, smooth wood underneath (normal shedding) or dry, dead wood (a sign of decline).

5. Fungal Growth on the Trunk or at the Base

Mushrooms, shelf fungi, conks, and other fungal fruiting bodies growing on the trunk or at the base of a tree are among the most serious warning signs.

These visible fungi are the reproductive structures of wood-decay organisms that are living inside the tree, consuming the wood from the inside out. By the time fungal fruiting bodies appear on the outside, the internal decay may be extensive.

Fungi at the base of the trunk indicate root decay. This is especially dangerous because root decay undermines the tree’s stability. A tree with significant root rot can topple with little warning, even in moderate wind.

Fungi on the trunk indicate decay in the heartwood. This weakens the tree’s structural core. Depending on the extent of the decay, the tree may be at risk of trunk failure.

Fungi on branches indicate localized decay that could lead to branch failure.

Not all mushrooms near a tree are cause for alarm. Some grow in the soil and are feeding on decaying organic matter rather than the tree’s living wood. But any fungal growth directly on the tree’s bark, trunk, or root flare should be evaluated by a tree care professional.

6. Leaning or Shifting

A tree that has grown at an angle for its entire life has developed compensating wood on the stressed side of the trunk and adapted its root system to support the lean. This type of lean is generally not a concern.

A new lean, one that has developed recently or worsened after a storm, is a different situation entirely. A new lean indicates that the root system is failing on one side. The roots are losing their grip in the soil, and the tree is beginning to tip.

Look for these associated signs: soil lifting or cracking on the side opposite the lean, exposed roots on the leaning side, and a gap opening between the trunk and the ground on one side.

A tree with a new lean is an emergency, especially if it is leaning toward your house, driveway, or other structures. Contact a professional immediately to evaluate the situation and determine whether the tree needs to be removed.

7. The Scratch Test Fails

This is a simple field test you can do yourself. Use your fingernail or a small knife to scratch a thin layer of bark off a twig or small branch. On a living branch, the tissue just beneath the bark (the cambium) will be green or light-colored and moist. On a dead branch, the tissue will be brown, dry, and brittle.

Test multiple branches in different parts of the canopy. If every branch you test shows brown, dry tissue, the tree is dead or dying. If some branches are green and others are brown, the tree is in partial decline, and a professional assessment can determine how much of the tree is still viable.

The scratch test works on twigs and small branches. It is not practical on the main trunk, where the bark is too thick to scratch through easily. But it gives you a quick, reliable answer about the condition of individual branches throughout the canopy.

8. Root Problems

Root issues are the hardest problems to detect because they happen underground, out of sight. But there are visible indicators that the root system is compromised.

Soil heaving or cracking around the base. If the ground is lifting or cracking in a circle around the trunk, roots may be pulling out of the soil. This is a stability concern.

Girdling roots. A girdling root is one that grows around the base of the trunk instead of outward. Over time, it tightens like a belt, strangling the trunk and cutting off the flow of water and nutrients. Girdling roots are often visible at the soil surface where the trunk meets the ground. A healthy tree shows a visible root flare at the base. A tree with girdling roots may have a trunk that goes straight into the ground like a telephone pole.

Construction damage. If construction, excavation, or grading work was done near the tree within the past 1 to 5 years, the root system may have been damaged. Root damage from construction often takes several years to manifest in the canopy. The tree may look fine for a year or two, then begin a slow decline as the damaged roots can no longer support the full canopy.

Standing water. If water consistently pools around the base of the tree, the roots may be suffering from oxygen deprivation. Waterlogged roots cannot absorb nutrients effectively and are vulnerable to root rot fungi.

9. Insect Infestation Signs

Heavy insect infestation can kill a tree, and the signs are often visible on the trunk and branches.

Exit holes. Small round holes in the bark indicate that boring insects have been feeding inside the tree. Emerald ash borer, for example, leaves distinctive D-shaped exit holes in the bark of ash trees. Clusters of small holes suggest a significant infestation.

Sawdust or frass. Fine sawdust-like material at the base of the tree or in bark crevices indicates boring insect activity. Carpenter ants leave coarse frass (wood shavings), while bark beetles leave fine dust.

Bark splitting or peeling. Woodpecker activity on the trunk (long vertical strips of removed bark) often indicates that the bird is feeding on insects beneath the bark. Heavy woodpecker damage suggests a significant insect population inside the tree.

Canopy thinning without other explanation. If the canopy is thinning and you have ruled out drought, root damage, and disease, insect feeding may be the cause. Some insects feed on leaves (defoliators), while others feed on the vascular tissue beneath the bark, disrupting water flow.

The emerald ash borer is the most devastating insect threat to trees in New Jersey currently. If you have ash trees and notice any combination of canopy thinning, bark splitting, D-shaped exit holes, or increased woodpecker activity, have the tree evaluated immediately.

What to Do When You Spot Warning Signs

If you see one or more of these signs on a tree on your property, the next step depends on the severity and the tree’s location.

One or two minor signs (a few dead branches, minor bark damage). Monitor the tree and schedule a professional evaluation within the next few weeks. This is not an emergency, but it deserves attention.

Multiple signs or rapid change. Schedule a professional evaluation promptly. A tree showing several warning signs simultaneously is in significant decline, and the sooner you understand the cause, the more options you have.

A tree with a new lean, major trunk crack, or extensive fungal growth near your house. This is an emergency. Contact a professional tree service immediately. Do not park vehicles, allow children to play, or spend time in the area beneath the tree until it has been evaluated.
